Target Practice in Gaza
November 19, 2008
By Nadia W. Awad for MIFTAH
What came first: the chicken or the egg? And who started the latest round of clashes in Gaza: the Israelis or the Palestinians? Depending on whom one asks, the answer will be different every time - the Israelis, the Palestinians, both are guilty, it depends… On November 5, Israeli forces entered Gaza, killing six Palestinians in the process. Since then, Palestinian fighters have been clashing with Israeli troops and dodging Israeli missiles. In response to every Israeli action, they play their only card- they fire homemade rockets into Israel. To date, 16 Palestinians have been killed, with zero Israeli fatalities recorded. Palestinians say Israel made the first move by entering Gaza in an unwarranted and aggressive manner. Israel, on the other hand, says it was responding to rumors of possible kidnapping attempts against Israeli soldiers and the threat of more rocket attacks. But debating who started the latest round of violence is an unproductive pastime. Instead, considering the timing and the consequences of these hostilities yields a much more interesting though sad tale.
November 5 was the day after the US presidential elections. It was also a few days before Hamas, Fatah, and other Palestinian factions were to head to Cairo for the unity talks that never happened.

What if It Happened to Them?
November 17, 2008
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
For the Jews, certain words have become taboo, especially when used by non-Jews. These include Holocaust, Apartheid and Nazism. Because of the atrocities that took place against Jews throughout history, namely the killing of six million during World War II, political Judaism has allowed itself a near monopoly over human suffering. What is worse, anyone who dares parallel this to the atrocities now carried out by the Jewish state of Israel against Palestinians risks being branded as "Anti-Semitic", a "Jew hater", or an "Israel basher."

Arafat’s Memory Commemorated Four Years On [November 9 - November 15]
November 15, 2008
By MIFTAH
Palestinians commemorated the fourth anniversary of the death of former Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, Abu Ammar, on November 11. Thousands gathered around the West Bank to remember him, while current President Mahmoud Abbas gave a speech in his honor, using the opportunity to stress the importance of national unity in the face of adversity. However, he did criticize Hamas for “thwarting” the Egyptian conciliation efforts, calling Hamas’s decision not to attend “unacceptable.” A Hamas spokesman labeled the comments an “attempt at incitement”.

By Isabel Kershner

An association representing international news organizations is campaigning for an end to an unusual Israeli policy barring foreign reporters from entering Gaza that has lasted for almost two weeks. The local Foreign Press Association, which represents reporters working for foreign news companies in Israel and the Palestinian territories, asked presidents of major news organizations on Tuesday to sign a letter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel protesting the policy.

Dividing Jerusalem, One Wall at a Time
November 20, 2008
By Bradley Burston
In Haaretz, 19 November, 2008
There is a new wall in the downtown heart of the Holy City. It is, in fact, a new security fence. It is not tall, nor built to last. But the wall, and what it protects, may do more to undermine Israel's moral claims to Jerusalem than the huge concrete structure that has marred the city's Arab eastern half for years.
