The first killing of a settler occurs when Yehoshua Saloma is shot to death in the open-air market in Hebron. Settlers in the city riot. The day after the killing, a group of settlers from Kiryat Arba squat in abandoned buildings in the heart of Hebron.
April 15
Israel cancels the municipal elections scheduled for later in the month out of concern that the nationalist-oriented Palestinian organizations will increase their power.
May 2
Six settlers are killed in Hebron, after which Israel deports the mayors of Hebron and Halhul and the qadi of Hebron.
June 2
The Jewish underground carries out its first terrorist act, aimed at the mayors of Nablus and Ramallah, who are severely injured.
July 30
The Basic Law: Jerusalem is enacted by the Knesset. The law declares the “unified” city to be the eternal capital of the Jewish people. The law has no practical significance.
